MYTHWILD

Updates

What is new in Mythwild

Mythwild changes most days. This page lists the changes you can see in the game, newest first: new places, characters and creatures, new things to wear and drive, and fixes to how it plays on a computer and a phone. There is nothing to download when it changes. The next time you open the game, you have the new version.

Fewer stutters out in the world

Several moments that used to freeze the game for an instant are gone, including Nova's dog Biscuit coming into view. There are half as many strangers walking along the roads, and they appear without a hitch, including when you walk away and come back.

The mountains can be climbed

You can walk or drive up the mountains until the edge of the world comes into view, instead of meeting an invisible wall partway up. Walkers are no longer drawn briefly inside a hill before popping back onto it.

The camera follows you round

As you turn left or right, the camera swings round behind you instead of lagging, a little more gently to the side than straight ahead. Pressing back still turns you to face the camera.

Buttons that show what they do

On phones and tablets the use button now shows what it will do: a horse or the unicorn to ride, a bucket, a gate, a bench, your car, or a walking figure to get off. Riding horses, the unicorn and the mares has its own prompt at last. The drift car gets a 🌀 drift button, and owning super speed no longer hides the handbrake, drift and arm buttons while you drive. Pressing E at the Crucible's gate now lets every player in.

A much bigger wardrobe

Everyone can pick from twelve face shapes, add long sleeves to any top with sleeves, and choose from twice as many boot colours. Female characters get lashes, mouth shapes, lipstick, eyeshadow and blush, new shoes, six new hairstyles, and new tops, skirts and dresses, including four ballroom gowns and short and long fitted dresses. Skirts and dresses flow and swing as you move. Thor and Loki stand in a broader, stronger stance, and the Arena shows your full look.

Dialogs give you a button

When a character asks you to do something, such as start a race, the conversation now shows a button for it, and phones and tablets are no longer told to press keyboard keys. Reneé's horse no longer vanishes from under her when she rides out.

Go fishing with Walt

Walt fishes the north pond, now twice the size and stocked with fish that leap now and then. He fills his cooler through the day, heads home at midnight, and tells stories about Bruce. Spend a few minutes near him and he offers you a seat: cast, strike when the float goes under, then hold to reel while you watch the tension on the line. Catches earn credits and count towards new Most Fish and Biggest Fish leaderboards, and somewhere in the pond is the legendary fish he has been chasing for thirty years.

Meet Nova and Biscuit

Nova jogs a long loop around the world, stopping to stretch, check her watch and take a drink. Talk to her for stories about the world's powers, and she will even show you a warp or a smite. Attack her, and her dog Biscuit turns, in slow motion, into a huge monster that hunts you down.

Kaléa's park, rebuilt under a dome

The bike park is now a domed arena with gates and six sections: a MegaRamp, a street plaza with stairs and handrails, a bowl, a mini ramp, a pump track and a beginners' area, all in graffiti and neon. Ledges, kerbs and rails replace the old fence for grinding, and Kaléa rides new lines, including a huge air off the MegaRamp.

Bruce's project bay

Bruce's Mod Shop opens into a big, bright workshop holding five project cars at different stages of a build, up on lifts, on stands, and one under a sheet. Bruce has something to say about each one as you walk up. The shop now sits behind a new crossroads with working traffic lights.

Your name sticks

Returning players keep the name saved with their progress instead of getting a new one each time, and you can change it any time by clicking or tapping your name in the corner. Leaderboards show the name you have today, not the one you had when you set the record.

Menus you can always close

Desktop players get the same ☰ menu as phones, in the top-right corner. The wardrobe fills the screen with your character beside the options, and every menu shares one look, with a ✕ to close it on any device.

Controls that feel right

While exploring, pressing back turns you round to walk towards the camera, turning left or right responds about twice as fast, and on a computer you can hold the right mouse button and drag to look around. In a fight, back walks you backwards while you keep facing your target, and A and D circle it. On a slow connection you are tugged back far less often, and other players turn more smoothly.

Animals show how they feel

Bears, boars, rhinos, hippos, wolves, crocodiles, the lion, snow leopards, yaks and elephants square up in an angry pose of their own, strongest when it is you they are after. Fleeing deer and other prey break into a real gallop, a stroked horse relaxes, a stroked cat raises its tail, and animals settle into a natural pose when they fall.

Old creatures, new bodies

The Lion-Man, Phoenix, Colossus and Celestial forms are rebuilt with proper joints and detail, and the Lion-Man is bigger and more muscular. Níðhöggr the dragon has legs, neck, tail and wings that move. Most of the remaining blocky characters and creatures use the new bodies, and rabbits and hares hop.

The Store opens: Thor and Loki

A new Store (⇧K, or from the menu) sells Thor and Loki for 45,000 credits each, earned in the game, and once bought they are yours for good. Thor is a towering storm god with Mjölnir who flies in bursts and can charge himself with lightning (⇧Z) to hit harder. Loki has his own face, cape and armour, fires energy bolts from his Serpent Sceptre, and can turn into a Frost Giant.

Easier transforming, and no accidental zoom

On phones and tablets, a character with a transformation gets a Transform button on screen, and the transform key works for every form you own. Moving and looking with two thumbs no longer zooms the page in by accident.

The Crucible and the Rift open to everyone

Their gates now appear for every player, not only for Mythic players. The school bus sounds more like a bus, too, with a slower build-up and a steady drone.

Phones: names, a closer camera, and no keyboard talk

Phones show name tags over nearby players and over yourself. The phone camera sits closer and looks down at the same angle as on a computer, so you see more of the ground around you, and prompts on a phone point to the on-screen buttons and the ☰ menu instead of keyboard keys.

Twelve skin tones and four builds

The wardrobe and the character creator offer twelve skin tones and four builds: standard, slim, heavy and strong. Arms are properly joined to chests, with no more daylight between them, and hips stay joined to the legs.

The lion's den is a real den

The den has a proper opening and chamber, the trees that blocked its entrance are cleared, and its rock is solid. The lion steps out of the cave mouth instead of appearing from the rock, and his roar is far deeper.

The World Tree becomes a giant you can climb

The World Tree on the savanna is now a vast spreading samaan tree whose crown is about twice as wide as the tree is tall. The spiral staircase is gone: you climb the trunk itself, and you can climb back down, circle the trunk or hang in place.

Redesigned weapons

All fifteen weapons have their own shape instead of sharing one, with new spark effects, and Mjölnir carries a runic inscription. The Worldender's smash leaps half again as high and lands the blade right on the explosion.

Super speed restyled, and six new outfits

Super speed leaves a sleek motion blur, speed streaks and kicked-up dust. The wardrobe adds six outfits, the Sailor, Hoodie, Space Suit, Military, Racing Suit and Varsity, dyed in whatever shirt colour you pick.

A livelier savanna

Dogs show their feelings with their tails, ears and bodies. Butterflies have real wings that beat, fold and settle on flowers, and the wildflowers have stems, leaves and petals. Elephants walk with a slow, heavy stride, and visitors on the savanna picnic, cycle and take photos, well away from the dangerous animals.

Every animal rebuilt, and a 28th to find

All the animal species are rebuilt with jointed, more detailed bodies, many in several breeds, including ten dogs, eight cats and eight horses. Dogs now roam the estate and the north pasture as a new species for your bestiary.

A new human look

The human head is a shaped skull with a jaw, chin, brow, nose and ears, with every hairstyle, beard and hat refitted, rounded limbs, hands with fingers and shoes with soles. Two long styles arrive: a beard to the waist and a braid to the ankles, both swinging as you move.

The great beasts rebuilt

Bigfoot, the Yeti, the Shark and the creatures of the Hollow and the Rift are rebuilt in far more detail, with knees and elbows that bend. The lion walks on jointed legs and paws.

Every character gets its own moves

Each of the eight unlockable characters has two idles, two emotes and two dances of its own, 48 new moves in all, such as the Robot's Pop and Lock and the Werewolf's Howl.

Eight new playable characters

Unlock the Robot, Alien, Bigfoot, Minotaur, Werewolf, Faun and Dragonkin as you climb the levels, with the Mythwild Titan waiting at level 50. They work with every animation, ride and weapon, and they can fight in the Arena.

A tour and a character creator

New players get a short guided tour over the live world that ends in a full-screen character creator. Replay it from 🎓 in the menu or with ?, and open the creator any time with ⇧O, where you can try on locked items before you earn them. Knees and elbows bend in every walk, dance and gesture, and there are six new dances to earn.

Foot races

Walk up to another player and challenge them to a race on foot down the drag strip (⇧R or the menu). Wins go on a new Foot Race Wins leaderboard. People who stand or stroll around the world are solid now, so you bump into them.

Leaderboards that pay, and the Hall of Records

A top-ten finish on any daily leaderboard pays credits at midnight, climbing the all-time boards pays too, and an Overall board ranks players across all of them. The Hall of Records near the start opens the boards as you walk in, and its archivist tells you where you stand. New Hunt boards time the fastest kills of the Yeti, the Shark, Bigfoot, the Hollow King and Níðhöggr.

The redwood and Old Gunnar

The Great Tree is now a 160-metre redwood, and Old Gunnar the lumberjack has been trying to chop it down for thirty years. He works until midnight by lantern light and breaks for lunch on a root to tell stories, while his dog Birch spends the day meeting a squirrel, a rabbit, a fox and another dog around the tree.

Pet any pet

Press ⇧F to pet a tame or owned animal, such as Birch, Kaléa's puppy, the cats, the horses, the black mare or the unicorn, and each responds in its own way.

A world map

A full-screen map (⇧J) shows forty places to go and things to do, with shaded hills and coastlines. It opens zoomed in on you so you can pan and zoom, and it fills a phone screen properly. You can hide the chat window, too.

New bodies for everyone

Human characters have arms that read as arms, with bare forearms and hands with thumbs. Riders sit on their saddles and reach down to the handlebars, and skateboards, scooters and skates are sized for you with the right stance.

Working vehicles

Three new machines join the world: a huge quarry hauler, now the biggest vehicle in the game, a school bus near the start and a backhoe loader on the estate. Give a friend a lift in the loader's bucket and work its arms with a mouse, a controller or the buttons on a phone. The wheels on every vehicle actually turn now. All 32 vehicles are on the vehicles page.

Wave, clap and pull a face

A gesture strip (⇧G, the menu, or a pinned button on a phone) lets you wave, clap, cheer, shrug, backflip, or look happy, sad, excited or angry, and faces change their brows and mouth to match.

Record a clip

Press ⇧C, or a button on a phone, to record a short clip of your play without the on-screen buttons in the way: up to 30 seconds on a computer and 15 on a phone. Computer players can copy an invite link with ⇧I.

Invite a friend into your world

Share an invite link from the menu and your friend joins the world you are in, as long as it has room. Before, two friends pressing play together could land in different worlds.

Safer chat

Chat filters offensive language while leaving ordinary words alone, player names are filtered too, and a ⚑ button reports a chat message.

Swap your thumbs, and a quick button

On phones and tablets you can swap the controls so the stick is on the right and the buttons on the left, and you can star any action in the menu to pin it to a quick button on screen. Race invites can be answered, and a car picked, with a tap.

See it for yourself

The newest version is the one you get when you press play. It is free, and there is nothing to install.
